Investment in Therapy

Real talk about the time, energy, and financial costs of getting the therapy you need so you can live the life you want

Investing in therapy is more than just a financial decision.

TIME

High-quality care for severe anxiety, complex trauma, and dissociation takes time. There are no shortcuts.

For the best results, you should be able to commit to attending weekly or biweekly sessions and spending some time outside of sessions thinking about therapy topics.

While I don't give homework handouts or logs to complete, you will feel better faster if you are pondering, journaling, or working through thoughts and feelings outside of session.

ENERGY

You need to be prepared for the mental, emotional, and even physical energy impact of in-depth therapy.

You can absolutely continue to live your life, and you will have an increase in energy when your anxiety eases, you unfold your complex trauma, or your dissociated thoughts become more integrated.

However, at certain points in our work, you may feel very depleted, and it is important to know this going in. Sometimes it's a bit of a slog through the mental swamp.

MONEY

Of course, there is the financial investment:

  • 50-minute sessions are $200

  • 90-minute intake appointments are $300

  • 90-minute intensive therapy sessions are $350, and $100 for each additional half hour as needed to meet treatment goals

  • Coordinated couples therapy is $1200 for four hours

I reserve a percentage of my weekly sessions for "scholarship" clients who pay a reduced rate. These are clients who have attended weekly sessions for at least three months, have shown commitment to the work, and are experiencing financial hardship.

The number one question I get is, "do you take my insurance?"

Unfortunately, I cannot take insurance and do the work I do.

Just like the world of physical health, insurance companies are working hard to avoid paying for mental health treatment. Do you have a lifetime of complex trauma? Well, you better be able to figure that out in six to eight sessions! Does dissociation make it feel like you are hanging onto reality by a fraying thread? Well, if you're not actively suicidal, then you're out of luck getting any complex care! Have some medications and go deal with it.

I believe in deep work that heals. Comprehensive care for a lifetime of severe anxiety, complex trauma, and dissociation cannot be forced into a checkbox-approval format, and I refuse to pretend that it can.

I can provide you with a superbill, which is a fancy receipt, which you can submit to your insurance for out-of-network (OON) benefits. These can range from nothing up to about $80 per session depending on your insurance plan, your deductible, etc.

You have to ask yourself: what is the cost of not coming to therapy?

What happens if you pass up on the chance to live the life you've always wanted?
